Why did we call it ‘Our ‘Appeltjes van Oranje’?
As you probably all know, our business school is founded in 1988 in the Netherlands by Dick Gerdzen. In 1992 we broadened our horizons and started a business school in Curaçao. Shortly after that South Africa and Nigeria followed. We are today an international business school located in China, Czech Republic, Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Suriname. Our corporate colour is orange and with good reason as orange is the national colour of the Netherlands. You therefore will not that whenever an international sport event takes place, and the Netherlands is partttaking, the supporters are dressed up in orange. Its origin lies in the history of the ‘House of Orange-Nassau’. In 1815 the Netherlands became a monarchy under the ‘House of Orange-Nassau’, which today is still the case.
That being said, the question arises: what has this got to do with “Appeltjes van Oranje”
In the Netherlands our oranges are not just oranges, they are also called ‘Appeltjes van Oranje’ (literally orange apples). The explanation of this wordplay is dual: firstly it refers to our oranges, but secondly it refers to our royal family, the “House of Orange-Nassau”. As our corporate colour is orange, we are a Dutch business school with international activities, we are situated in the royal city Buren and we are situated in the Netherlands, and the Netherlands has a ‘Orange History’, we decided to refer to our balloon selfie campaign “Appeltjes van Oranje”. The image that goes with the campaign is chosen in the light of this, but with a twist. It’s an orange tree, but the oranges are replaced by our orange balloons. Do we still make sense? 😉
Since 1988 a lot has happened and BSN grew tremendously. Over the past 30 years over 4000 students graduated, many accreditations and recognitions have been achieved and the extending to other countries continues. You could say we are proud of our business school.
