Fiston Alex Twagirimana, a current MBA student at Business School Netherlands (BSN), recently visited the headquarters in Buren, the Netherlands, for a series of transformative conferences. Fiston is the CEO of Food Security Educators in Rwanda, an organisation dedicated to addressing food security issues. His journey at BSN and the application of Action Learning in his work are driving significant change in his community.

Introduction to Fiston and food security Educators

Fiston Alex is the CEO of Food Security Educators, an organisation he founded to combat food insecurity in Rwanda. With a focus on ensuring the availability, accessibility, and stability of food, Fiston’s organisation works on various fronts, including social, economic, and environmental aspects. His mission is to make a meaningful impact in a country where a significant portion of the population lives under poverty and faces food insecurity.

The Decision to Pursue an MBA

Fiston Alex’s decision to pursue an MBA was motivated by his desire to bring innovative solutions to his organisation and community. While studying in the Netherlands in 2020, he discovered BSN and was particularly drawn to the Action Learning methodology, which integrates practical problem-solving with academic learning.

Q: What motivated you to pursue an MBA, and why did you choose BSN?

Fiston Alex: I chose BSN because of the Action Learning approach. This problem-solving methodology allows me to address real issues in my organisation while studying. It’s practical and helps me reflect on the results, which is crucial for my career and the impact I want to make.

The Impact of Action Learning

The Action Learning methodology at BSN has been a game-changer for Fiston Alex. Unlike traditional theoretical approaches, Action Learning focuses on solving real-world problems. Fiston has already begun implementing what he has learned, benefiting his organisation significantly.

Q: How has the Action Learning methodology impacted your learning and professional growth?

Fiston Alex: Action Learning has been very beneficial. It allows me to implement what I learn directly into my work. For example, I’ve started integrating community support initiatives, understanding that businesses should also give back to their communities. This approach has made a significant difference.

Networking and Collaboration

Fiston Alex’s visit to the Netherlands allowed him to meet and engage with his fellow students in person. This face-to-face interaction greatly expanded his social network and created opportunities for future collaborations.

Q: How has meeting your classmates in person benefited you?

Fiston Alex: Meeting my classmates in person has been amazing. We’ve shared experiences and brainstormed on how to work together. This has expanded my social network and provided valuable insights into different approaches and solutions.

Personal Growth and Future Plans

Fiston’s experience at BSN has significantly improved his professional capabilities while also fostering personal development. He has acquired a wider understanding of global challenges and gained important insights into digital transformation and strategic planning.

Q: What key insights have you gained that you plan to implement in your work?

Fiston Alex: One key insight is the importance of digital platforms. I realised the necessity of having a strong online presence for marketing and outreach. When I return home, I plan to develop our website and create social media platforms to enhance our communication and engagement with the community.
