Future-Focused Leadership for Engineers

In news by Business School Netherlands

Engineers are at the forefront of both technological innovation and societal change. At our headquarters in the Netherlands, Business School Netherlands (BSN) has joined forces with the Royal Dutch Society of Engineers (KIVI) to support engineers in growing their leadership capacity through a series of four targeted masterclasses and a modular Action Learning MBA track.

While these masterclasses are currently being delivered in Dutch for the local engineering community, BSN can also offer them in English for individuals or organisations interested in participating from other countries. The leadership challenges these masterclasses address – such as digital transition, sustainability, and agility – are globally relevant, making them suitable for a wider audience.

A Shared Vision for Strategic, Impactful Engineers

This collaboration is built on a shared ambition: to strengthen engineers in more than just technical capability. The goal is to support engineers in becoming strategic, entrepreneurial, and socially aware professionals – equipped to respond to the rapidly evolving demands of their sectors.

The content aligns with the E4E Training Suite, a methodology designed to develop broad-based competencies needed in today’s complex business environments.

Four Masterclasses to Tackle Real-World Challenges

Engineers have the opportunity to take part in one or more of the following high-impact masterclasses, selected for their relevance to key industry shifts:

  • Leading Change
Learn how to mobilise people and resources to navigate complex organisational transformation.
  • Digital Transition
Understand key technological trends and how to turn them into opportunities for innovation and growth.
  • Strategic Agility
Strengthen your organisation’s adaptability and build strategies that can withstand disruption.
  • Sustainability Leadership with Impact
Develop the mindset and tools to embed sustainability in your engineering and business decisions.

These masterclasses can be taken on their own or used as building blocks toward a modular MBA, delivered through BSN’s Action Learning methodology.

The Action Learning Approach: Learning by Doing

BSN’s programmes are grounded in Action Learning – a practical, results-driven method where participants work on real organisational challenges while applying new knowledge and frameworks.

This approach encourages engineers to think analytically, act systematically, and focus on impact. Participants are supported in critically reflecting on their leadership behaviours, collaborating in learning teams, and applying their insights in real-time. The result is deeper learning and measurable progress.

Why This Matters for Engineers

This programme was designed with engineers in mind. It speaks their language – both in content and in practical application. It’s relevant to the world engineers operate in and recognises the mindset they bring to problem-solving.

Participants also receive one-on-one coaching to help them build new ways of thinking and working – suited to both technological and societal change.

Four Core Competency Areas

The masterclasses and modular MBA track focus on four essential areas of development for future-focused engineers:

  • Life Competences
Skills such as empathy, flexibility, and self-management, vital for effective collaboration and leadership.
  • Entrepreneurship Skills
Creativity, financial insight, and planning – all of which support an entrepreneurial way of thinking and acting.
  • Digital Skills
Data literacy, cybersecurity awareness, and understanding of digital trends – critical in any modern organisation.
  • Green Skills
Knowledge and practices that support sustainable decision-making and align with climate and environmental goals.
