For Arjan Epskamp, his impactful learning journey began with a clear mission: to translate strategies into operational results more effectively. But as the programme progressed, it became clear that the power of the MBA extended further. The curriculum at Business School Netherlands (BSN) not only gave him the knowledge to improve his communication with other departments but also enabled him to look at organisations more broadly and deeply. His perspective on business management gained a new dimension. Read on to see how Arjan went from strategy to action with an MBA programme at BSN.
Small Scale as a Strength
It was no coincidence that Arjan chose BSN. His previous experience with the mini MBA (Leadership with Impact Programme) at BSN in the Netherlands was immediately comforting, offering a familiar and reassuring environment.
The intimate and homely nature created a community where students really know and support each other.
This personal aspect, combined with the methodology of Action Learning, provided Arjan with a solid foundation to tackle complex issues in practice.
Learning During a Pandemic: Connectedness at a Distance
His journey began in September 2019, just as the COVID-19 pandemic emerged. Classes continued online, but the sense of connectedness remained.
It always felt a bit like coming home.
Arjan describes the close-knit and personal interaction, even during substitute lessons in other groups. The pandemic brought new challenges but also strengthened the sense of unity and collaboration among the students.
Insights that Surprise and Change
What made this MBA journey unique for Arjan was the transformation it triggered in his thinking and attitude. The insights he gained changed his perspective and strengthened his position as a discussion partner. The Action Learning method proved to be an effective means to analyse deeply and develop strategic solutions.
Thanks to Action Learning, I started asking better questions which brought the core of the issue to the forefront sooner.
A Research with Broad Value
Arjan’s dissertation (the Action Learning Graduation Project) focused on stakeholder interests at Rijkswaterstaat. Although he remains modest about the impact within the organisation itself, its value proved to extend even further. By paying attention to the needs of local residents and stakeholders, he was able to translate these into appropriate solutions, with broader sectoral impact.
Professional and Personal Growth Go Hand in Hand
This MBA experience not only gave Arjan a boost in his professional life but also led to personal growth.
Thanks to broader knowledge and refining my questioning techniques, thanks to Action Learning, I became more confident and effective in my discussions with stakeholders and entrepreneurs.
This illustrates how the MBA from Business School Netherlands is more than an academic achievement; it is a means to realise self-awareness and sustainable impact. This is how you turn strategy to action with an MBA.
