We spoke to Itumeleng Mmutloane during his recent visit to our headquarters in Buren where he attended a conference with fellow students. He is currently enrolled in the International Action Learning MBA with a major in water management.
Q: Hi Itumeleng, thank you for joining us. Can you start by telling us a bit about yourself?
Itumeleng Mmutloane: Thank you for the opportunity. My name is Itumeleng Mmutloane, and I come from South Africa. I work for the Department of Water and Sanitation as a Chief Engineer. I lead the Technical Services sub-directorate, which includes maintenance and operations, environmental engineering, enterprise risk management, and survey services.
Q: What motivated you to pursue an MBA, and why did you choose Business School Netherlands (BSN)?
Itumeleng: After 15 years of leading technical teams, I recently became Head of Technical Services. I realised I needed to improve my skills in managing people and solving complex managerial problems. I’ve always been good at solving engineering problems, but people management requires a different approach. I chose BSN because of their unique Action Learning methodology. I wanted to learn in a way that allowed me to act while I learn, which BSN offers.
Q: How has the Action Learning methodology impacted your learning and professional growth?
Itumeleng: The Action Learning methodology at BSN has been transformative. Unlike traditional programmes that focus on theoretical knowledge and exams, BSN integrates assignments directly into the workplace. We are expected to take assignments, apply them in our work environment, and learn as we act. This hands-on approach has enriched my learning experience and provided immediate benefits to my team and organisation.
Q: Can you give an example of how you are applying Action Learning in your work?
Itumeleng: One key aspect of BSN’s methodology is the Action Learning Projects (ALPs). For instance, I’m currently working on a strategy management course. I’ve decided to involve my colleagues in developing a strategy for our section. This way, my team learns alongside me, and we embed these new tools and skills into our business practices. This approach helps us solve many problems and aims to elevate South Africa’s water management sector.
Q: How has the international aspect of BSN’s programme influenced your experience?
Itumeleng: Working with peers from different countries, such as Nigeria and Ethiopia, has broadened my perspective. We operate in an international space, which means dealing with different cultural approaches. This diversity has taught me a lot about global business practices and leadership styles. It’s been a valuable learning experience.
Q: How was your experience at the physical conference in the Netherlands?
Itumeleng: The two-week conference was incredibly interactive and immersive. Unlike online sessions, where we might be distracted, being physically present allowed us to concentrate fully. We tackled problems in teams using the Action Learning method. This hands-on, collaborative environment fostered deep learning and created lasting connections among participants.
Q: What key insights have you gained that you plan to implement in your work?
Itumeleng: The marketing management module was particularly eye-opening. I used to think marketing was only for the private sector. Now, I see its value in government work as well. I plan to develop a marketing strategy for my department to enhance our brand and communication efforts. This insight will help us advance our organisation’s goals.
Q: What do you see as the broader impact of your MBA on your organisation and the water sector in South Africa?
Itumeleng: I’m optimistic about the broader impact of my MBA on our organisation and the water sector in South Africa. By integrating Action Learning into our practices, we can foster a culture of continuous learning and problem-solving. This approach will help us address many challenges and contribute to the advancement of our country.
Q: Any final thoughts on your journey with BSN?
Itumeleng: This journey highlights the importance of practical, hands-on learning in addressing complex managerial challenges and fostering innovation. As I continue to apply my newfound skills and knowledge, I hope to inspire other professionals to enhance their impact through advanced education and collaborative learning.
Q: Thank you so much, Itumeleng, for sharing your insights. We wish you all the best in your journey and future endeavors.
Itumeleng: Thank you very much. I’m looking forward to graduating and making significant contributions to the water management sector and beyond.
