Designing Success with the Action Learning MBA

In news by Business School Netherlands

Helen Bührs is not just graduating with an Action Learning MBA from Business School Netherlands; she’s doing it with distinction. As the dynamic CEO of Inscape Education Group, Helen has transformed her deep passion for design and design education into a thriving hub of educational innovation. Having been a part of Inscape for 24 years, she has ascended to leadership roles and consistently pioneered new initiatives. Among her achievements, spearheading projects like Four44 Creative Ecosystems and Inscape Exchange has been crucial in expanding educational access and quality, providing innovative platforms and scholarships for the underserved.

The Foundation of Action Learning

Helen chose to pursue her MBA at Business School Netherlands specifically because of its focus on action learning. This methodology, renowned for its practical application in real-world challenges, resonated deeply with her need for hands-on problem-solving. It empowered her to address pressing issues at Inscape, dramatically demonstrating the profound impact of her educational journey.

Helen noted,

The implementation of action learning principles shifted our approach to become more consultative in addressing challenges.

She further explained how action learning enhanced their existing design thinking processes, already integral to their operations. This approach allowed the organisation to develop creative and flexible strategies for tackling complex problems.

Dissertation Impact: Strategic Change and Leadership Enhancement

For her MBA dissertation, Helen tackled the complex strategic challenges, operational misalignments, and cultural dynamics at Inscape. Her goal was to simplify the institution’s complexities and streamline the adoption of new strategies. Through an extensive analysis involving various stakeholders, Helen identified critical delays in strategy implementation and proposed evidence-based changes to enhance organisational alignment and communication.

The implementation of Helen’s recommendations led to transformative changes within Inscape. The organisation underwent significant restructuring, including the appointment of a Chief Operating Officer, which improved operational functions and strategic focus. A new leadership development programme was introduced, significantly enhancing the capabilities of the top leaders and aligning their efforts more closely with organisational goals. Additionally, the rollout of the People Strategy and the Strategic Dialogue programme boosted communication and engagement across the company.

These initiatives received positive feedback from staff, highlighting improved morale and better alignment with Inscape’s goals. The changes fostered a more effective management environment and strengthened the organisation’s overall responsiveness and strategic execution. This enhancement has increased its capacity to adapt and thrive in a competitive landscape.

Professional and Personal Transformation

Helen’s Action Learning MBA experience has profoundly affected both her professional capabilities and personal development. The skills developed through the action learning process have propelled her to significant roles, including a position on the Institutional Audits Committee for the Council on Higher Education. Helen shared,

The reflective practice that resulted from the programme has shifted my thinking significantly. I did not expect the level of personal improvement that I have experienced.

This newfound clarity and enhanced decision-making ability have led her to reevaluate and strengthen her approaches to leadership and organisational development. As a result, she has become a more effective leader, better equipped to handle complex challenges.

Helen’s journey with BSN is an example of how an Action Learning MBA can empower professionals to lead and innovate. Her accomplishments highlight the programme’s ability to foster both professional development and personal growth, underscoring the profound impact of BSN’s educational approach.
