An MBA with Action Learning: Learn by Doing, Lead with Impact

In news by Business School Netherlands

An MBA with Action Learning is not just another degree—it’s a practical approach to leadership that equips professionals with real-world problem-solving skills. At Business School Netherlands (BSN), our MBA goes beyond theory, using Action Learning to ensure students apply knowledge directly to their organisations, delivering measurable impact.

Action Learning is a transformative approach to executive education that sits at the heart of Business School Netherlands (BSN)’s MBA programmes. It is more than a teaching methodology—it is a dynamic framework designed to tackle the complex challenges of modern business environments. By fostering critical thinking, resilience, and adaptability, Action Learning equips leaders with the tools they need to succeed in an era of rapid change.

Action Learning: A Methodology for Real-World Impact

Action Learning addresses the shortcomings of traditional academic approaches by integrating real-world problem-solving into the learning process. “Management theory is stable, but the ground beneath it is constantly shifting,” explains Professor Pierre Strydom, a seasoned expert in Action Learning. This methodology ensures that managers are not only acquiring knowledge but applying it in ways that drive meaningful organisational change.

The Core Elements of Action Learning

The success of BSN’s Action Learning methodology lies in its six key elements:

  • Real-World Challenges: Participants focus on significant, urgent, and growth-oriented problems within their organisations.
  • Collaborative Groups: Students work in diverse subsets of 4–8 peers, bringing varied perspectives to the table.
  • Reflective Inquiry: Asking insightful questions drives deeper understanding and innovative solutions. “Questions entice people to create new knowledge,” notes Professor Strydom.
  • Action-Oriented Solutions: Practical implementation of solutions is a fundamental part of the process.
  • Commitment to Learning: Reflection on outcomes ensures continuous improvement.
  • Leadership in Action: Group leaders facilitate discussions, keeping them focused and productive.

Phases of the MBA Programme

BSN’s MBA programme is structured into three distinct phases, each integrating Action Learning:

Phase 1: Skill Foundation Students begin by conducting an organisational analysis and completing an Action Learning literature review. These assignments introduce them to management sciences and Action Learning principles while encouraging the identification of areas for improvement within their organisations.

Phase 2: Practical Application During this phase, students undertake core courses in disciplines such as marketing, HR, and operations management, alongside four Action Learning projects. These projects address real organisational issues, with each student receiving tailored coaching to develop actionable solutions. According to Professor Strydom, “The aim is not just to solve problems but to create a measurable return on investment and learning.”

Phase 3: Strategic Integration The final phase culminates in a dissertation, where students address a strategic challenge within their organisation. This phase requires students to connect business concepts, exhibit strategic leadership, and deliver impactful results.

The Unique Value of Action Learning

Action Learning fosters a collaborative and innovative learning environment. Students benefit from diverse perspectives and the guidance of experienced Action Learning coaches. This holistic approach ensures that graduates are well-equipped to tackle complex organisational challenges. “Action Learning creates resilient, ambiguity-enabled managers who can thrive in today’s dynamic business landscape,” says Professor Strydom.

ROI and ROL: Return on Investment and Learning

A key strength of Action Learning is its dual focus on Return on Investment (ROI) and Return on Learning (ROL). By addressing real-world challenges, students deliver tangible value to their organisations while developing their own skills. “Every project and assignment is an opportunity to create meaningful impact,” Professor Strydom explains.

The Role of Reflection and Questioning

At the heart of Action Learning is the practice of reflective inquiry. Students learn to ask deep, probing questions that challenge conventional thinking. “Statements mirror known knowledge, but questions entice the creation of new knowledge,” says Professor Strydom. This skill is critical for navigating the complexities of Industry 4.0.

Why BSN’s MBA Stands Out

BSN’s MBA programmes are designed to deliver real-world impact. Action Learning ensures that every aspect of the curriculum is practical, relevant, and transformative. Graduates emerge as leaders who can think critically, act decisively, and drive innovation within their organisations. “This is not just a degree; it’s a journey of growth and transformation,” remarks Professor Strydom.

Action Learning is a powerful educational methodology that equips managers with the skills to lead in an ever-changing business landscape. By integrating this approach into its MBA programmes, BSN ensures that its graduates are not only knowledgeable but also capable of applying their learning to create lasting impact. For professionals seeking an MBA that delivers both personal and organisational transformation, BSN offers an unparalleled opportunity.
