In news by Business School Netherlands

Dr Sylvia Sathekge, a distinguished alumna of Business School Netherlands, has consistently demonstrated her strategic leadership and innovative approach in the field of technology and leadership across South Africa. With over two decades of experience, her career spans multiple industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, tax, audit, mining, aerospace, and the public sector.

Driving Digital Transformation at SNG Grant Thornton

Currently, Dr Sathekge serves as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at SNG Grant Thornton, where she is not only a CIO but also a partner in the firm. In this role, she has been pivotal in driving digital transformation initiatives and enhancing cybersecurity frameworks, positioning the firm as a leader in technology and leadership.

Dr Sathekge’s journey in ICT began when she was one of the few South African students to study technology as a school subject. This was thanks to a pioneering programme by Eskom and the Ort Foundation. She chose to pursue information technology after high school, eventually earning five degrees, including a Master’s in Business Leadership (MBL) and a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from Business School Netherlands. Her DBA focused on digital transformation with an emphasis on cyber culture, further solidifying her expertise in both technology and leadership.

Pioneering Roles and Mentorship in ICT

Throughout her career, Dr Sathekge has taken on challenging roles that have allowed her to leverage her expertise in both IT and business operations. Notably, she played a crucial role at Eskom, managing coal operations supply and running a programme to optimise cost plus coal mines. Dr. Sathekge further amplified her impact at Babcock International by successfully advocating for the creation of a CIO role, which earned her a seat at the executive table and highlighted the importance of integrating technology and leadership at the highest levels of the organisation.

In addition to her corporate achievements, Dr Sathekge is passionate about developing talent and believes in the importance of bringing people along in the digital transformation journey. She is known for her commitment to mentoring and has made it a point to ensure that those who report to her grow professionally, reflecting her dedication to both technology and leadership.

Recognition and Influence in the Tech Industry

Recently, Dr Sathekge was honoured as one of the Top 100 Influential Women in Technology by ITWeb Brainstorm South Africa and BCX. This recognition during South Africa’s Women’s Month highlights her significant contributions to technology and leadership and serves as an inspiration to women aspiring to lead in this field. Reflecting on this honour, Dr Sathekge shared,

This recognition inspires me to keep pushing boundaries, empowering others, and striving for excellence every day.

As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, Dr Sathekge’s achievements stand as a powerful reminder of the vital role women play in shaping the future of technology and leadership. Her story is an inspiring example of how continuous learning, strategic thinking, and a commitment to excellence can lead to impactful leadership in today’s digital world.

As Dr Sylvia Sathekge continues to shape the future of technology, she remains a role model for aspiring leaders, especially women, in the field of ICT.
