Marcel Heijnen: Leadership, Innovation, and Growth

In impact stories by Business School Netherlands

Marcel Heijnen, an MBA alumnus of Business School Netherlands (BSN) and Deputy Branch Manager at THK Europe BV (Toughness, High Quality, and Know-how), demonstrates how an MBA journey contributes to both professional and personal development. His experiences highlight how the focus on Action Learning can have a transformative impact on a career and organisations in terms of leadership, innovation and growth.

The Power of Action Learning

My MBA studies at BSN were more than just an academic journey; it was a profound transformation.

The Action Learning method enabled Marcel to apply theoretical concepts directly in practice. This not only led to improved processes within THK GmbH but also fostered a deeper strategic mindset. During his MBA, he tackled complex challenges related to strategy, process optimisation, and leadership in international contexts.

These challenges forced me to critically reflect on my approach and effectiveness as a leader.

His dissertation focused on strategies to enhance internal alignment and flexibility, contributing to the organisation’s international competitiveness.

Personal Growth and Leadership Development

A key aspect of his MBA journey was his growth as a leader. He emphasises how the combination of theory and practice helped him refine his leadership skills.

It was essential to adapt my style to meet the needs of different team members, especially within multicultural teams.

Reflection sessions with his subset peers at BSN played a crucial role in this process.

These sessions gave me the opportunity to leverage my strengths and work on specific areas for development.

This led to improved team dynamics and a stronger ability to make strategic decisions.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Beyond leadership, innovation was a central theme in his MBA experience.

At THK, I encouraged teams to think more creatively and solve problems proactively.

This resulted in innovative product concepts and enhanced processes, delivering tangible impact on the organisation. One standout example was his involvement in developing innovative solutions for the high-tech industry. He proudly shares:

These projects not only contributed to the organisation’s growth but also to my own professional development.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead

Marcel Heijnen looks back on his time at Business School Netherlands with gratitude.

The support from my subset peers, BSN tutors, and my international colleagues at THK GmbH was invaluable.

A special thanks goes to Gruppo Mondial in Italy, who played a key role in the international group assignment in Milan.

With the knowledge and experience gained, Marcel looks ahead with confidence.

I see it as my responsibility to apply the insights and skills acquired during my MBA to help organisations grow, drive innovation, and achieve sustainable results.

His story is an inspiring example of how an MBA journey fosters not only professional but also personal transformation—where leadership and innovation go hand in hand towards lasting impact.
